Survive and Flourish

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As an associate clinical social worker, working two jobs, it's sometimes a challenge to allocate time to engage in self-care. Within my first year working at a DMH agency and private practice, I noticed that I was very close to burning out and my cup was completely full. Here are some ideas that I've personally implemented to improve on my ability to not only survive but flourish all of my therapeutic demands.

  1. First and foremost, say "No." Saying no is really saying yes to yourself.

  2. Take a fitness class several times per week. Fitness classes help me forget about thoughts and help me get in touch with the feelings in my body. The release of endorphins also help me in improving my mood.

  3. Spend time in nature. Spending time in nature, according to research, shows that time spent in nature reduces cortisol stress levels and possible anti-cancer effects.

  4. Spend quality time with loved ones. Spending time with loved ones helps build a positive, and strong community, as well as strengthens ties to those that are closest to you. Spending time with loved ones also is a great opportunity to create new memories, and cultivate a healthy lifestyle.

  5. Invest in your own personal therapy. Investing time and income on personal therapy was one of the best decisions I have made in growing as an individual professionally and personally. Personal therapy has also helped me with improving my ability to cope with my stressors personally and professionally. It's a wonderful way to focus one hour a week for yourself and your self-care.

  6. Use humor in your day to day. Humor for me does not come naturally, however humor has become a source of survival for me. Take note of who makes you laugh and smile, and spend time with them. Grab a cup of coffee with your jovial co-worker. Call up your goofy aunt. Social bonds and the benefits of laughter are well worth the effort.
