Marissa Esquibel, LMFT

2023 Scholarship Recipient

Marissa Esquibel is an LMFT, private practice owner, and podcaster. She started her private practice in March 2020 and provides telehealth to young adults across California. She specializes in codependency. Her show, The Codependummy podcast, was created in January 2021 and is focused on empowering young women to stop playing small and start taking up space.

Marissa attended UC Santa Barbara for her undergraduate degree, CSU Fullerton for her Masters of Science in Clinical Psychology, and became a licensed psychotherapist in 2018. She decided to become a therapist after her life-changing experience attending therapy while struggling in her early 20s with boundaries, burnout, and poor body image. She aims to provide a similar experience to her clients.

Marissa worked towards her licensure at Straight Talk located in La Mirada and Haynes Family of Programs in La Verne. During that time, she worked with clients between the ages of 4-74 years old via individual, couples, family, and group therapy. As an associate, she worked the community mental health program, Wraparound, with foster and probation youth. After becoming licensed, Marissa worked for a group practice, Soultenders, at their location in Claremont. During that time, she experienced ageism in reverse where young adults–college students, graduate students, and young professionals–were calling and requesting to work specifically with her (a young therapist who "gets it"). In March 2020, she made the jump and established her very own practice where she treats codependency in young adults–20 and 30-somethings–via individual and group therapy.

Outside of therapy and podcasting, Marissa loves reading, meditating, spending time with family, hiking, and getting together with friends and family. She and her husband look forward to starting a family soon.
