      This presentation introduces clinicians to the experience of being transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC). It will describe a culturally competent and affirmative therapy approach in working with this population. Major themes include terms and language competence, trans* minority stress, intersectionality, and clinician's role in history as "gatekeeper."

Course meets the qualifications for 1 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
      
 
James Guay is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice specializing in working with the LGBTQ community, individuals and couples since 1999. He has taught several weekend workshops on LGBTQ related topics at Esalen Institute and JFK University. James is Co-Chair of the National Center for Lesbian Rights' #BornPerfect Campaign Advisory Committee. He worked with transgender youth for seven years at an agency and health clinic in San Francisco and has been involved in transgender advocacy for several years. He is currently serving on the State Board of Directors for the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT). He's also a part-time social justice activist with a mission to help others enjoy their sexuality in a shame-free, fun and positive way. To advance this cause, he's testified against conversion therapy at California's State Capital, appeared on Lisa Ling's Our America show, appeared on various documentaries including VICE, and has been interviewed and/or written articles for Time, NY Times, LA Times, Huffington Post, Rage Magazine and the Advocate. James co-hosts a radio/podcast/youtube show called Getting It On to dispel myths about sex/sexuality and put out positive and entertaining information on sexual health/pleasure: www.thejamesandheathershow.com

Refund Policy 
Requests for refunds must be in writing and received by SFV-CAMFT before one week prior to the event. A $2 administrative fee will be deducted for cancellation of a paid event, through the cancellation deadline. There will be no refunds on requests received after one week prior to the event. The President has discretion to issue refunds that do not comply with the policy. To request a refund, click here
