"Being All That: Building Healthy Self-Esteem in our Trumped-Up Age"
One of the top agendas in psychotherapy has always been the building of Self-Esteem, especially in younger clients. However, this has grown in difficulty in recent years, largely due to two occurrences: the backlash against teaching Self-Esteem to kids, by those who find it coddling and anti-incentivizing, and the flaunting of excessive ego we see in everything from hip-hop music and videos to celebrities (Charlie Sheen) and newly-minted politicians. Therapists need a new specific model of Self-Esteem, one that allows for diversity and helps their clients (both young and adult) and their families grow and thrive in our over-entertained, constantly wired society.
This course is intended for beginning to advanced therapists.
Learning Objectives
In successfully completing and attending this presentation,
participants will be able to:
~Identify at least 1 Self-Esteem issue: from neurobiology/sociology behind Blame, to value changes across our lifespan, to our culture's current obsession with blatant narcissism and display.~
~Differentiate between building true Self-Esteem vs other/weak substitutes and understand how our concept of Self-Esteem can evolve in a world of changing roles within diversity.~
~Apply at least 1 intervention with clients to help build real Self-Esteem and battle negative internal/external voices.~
Douglas Green is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Professional Clinical Counselor, as well as a Registered Drama Therapist. He is also experienced in working with Substance Abuse, Bipolar and Borderline Personality Disorders, and Unresolved Grief.
