"The Psychology of Money and Your Practice"
with Roger Schwarz, LMFT, JD

The psychology of money will be brought to life as it relates to our own personalities and those of our clients. The presentation will begin with legal, financial and business considerations in setting up a private practice. Next, we will be attuned to the powerful force money psychology has on our clients, the therapeutic environment, and us. Case examples will be given where money psychology issues become challenging and how to handle them. They will include fee setting, collection, and dynamics where couples and families are involved.

This course is intended for beginning to advanced therapists.

Learning Objectives
In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
  1. Identify 3 ways powerful psychological influence money and finance has on experiencing and behaving in professional practices and in private life.
  2. Learn 3 fundamentals concerning the financial aspects of creating and managing a private practice including the form of organization, business tax, income tax planning, fee setting, billing, joining insurance panels or not, and more.
  3. Understanding at least 4 interventions to apply psychology of money to integration of self worth with caring for the client.
  4. State 3 therapeutic considerations around interacting with clients about subjects such as fee setting and collections.
  5. Learn 2 basics of how to assess clients' money personalities, apply theoretical approach where money issues are involved, and how all this is compounded where a couple or family or family-owned business is involved.

Roger Schwarz, LMFT, JD has a general practice in Beverly Hills and Encino in which he specializes in counseling with couples and family businesses. Roger combines over twenty-five years of training and experience as a psychotherapist with a previous career as a lawyer/CPA and personal financial advisor. He has spoken about couples therapy and psychology of money to many organizations including Cedars-Sinai Work & Life Matters EAP, The Center for the Study of Women's Psychology and the couples therapy division of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association. Roger's particular way of integrating his own personal journey with his professional training and experience has produced an orientation toward psychotherapy built to help clients see the session as an experience to be channeled into practice moment by moment the rest of the week, thereby becoming integral to a fulfilling way of life.
