"Your Clients are not Immune: Uncovering the Myth of Modern-day Slavery in our own Backyard"

At least 100,000 to 300,000 youth are at risk for commercial sexual exploitation annually in the U.S. (Estes and Wiener, 2001). This presentation will provide clinicians with a clear understanding of what to look for when assessing a child who may have a history of sexual exploitation. In addition, information will be provided to help professionals work with children and adolescents who have been exploited or who are at risk. Therapist's will be able to help parents facilitate a home environment of safety for a child who has been violated in this horrific manner as well as be able to identify the risk factors, be aware of the protective factors, and be prepared for what may face children from all walks of life in this digital world in which we live.

Learning Objectives
In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
  1. Identify 3 characteristics that make clients vulnerable to recruitment by sex traffickers.
  2. Describe 5 signs which indicate a client may be in the process of grooming.
  3. Identify the 7 dos and don'ts to prepare parents in talking to their children about sex trafficking.
  4. Describe 5 common profiles of traffickers to make parents aware of potential dangers, including friends, relatives, and social media contacts.
