"Narcissist: The Skilled Abuser

(Part II: Behind the Mask)"

Dr. Barrett's aim is to help clinicians see outside of the textbook definition of the Narcissistic Personality Disorder and present a more practical, experiential, and accurate portrayal of this pathology within families to help clinicians identify how NPD presents within the family system. Focusing on the effects of the disorder on children who grow up with a narcissistic parent, the presentation will provide information on how to help survivors manage their expectations should they remain in contact with loved ones who have the disorder. The root and criteria of Narcissistic Personality Disorder will be revisited, providing a basis for individuals who may not have attended Part I of Dr. Barrett's presentation last year. Dr. Barrett's research and experience will also help clinicians provide skills to assist clients in how to avoid being baited into the narcissist's chaos as well as help the client identify the inner child's need to satiate the narcissistic parent.

Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify 5 masks/persona types that narcissists use to help clinicians identify narcissistic personality disorder in their clients or victims of NPD.
  2. List 4 ways a narcissistic parent can directly influence a child negatively to assist clinicians in identifying what could be underlying issues in their adult and underage clients.
  3. List at least 4 things to be aware of in victims of NPD to inform the therapeutic approach.
  4. Identify at least 2 Do's and Don'ts to help clients who cannot distance themselves from a narcissist.
