"DBT Strategies in the Treatment of Emotion Dysregulation"

Despite advances in the understanding of borderline personality disorder and self-harming behaviors, many therapists feel they are not equipped to deal with clients who may struggle with some of these characteristics. This training will infuse the therapist with some of the evidence-based strategies used in DBT treatment that may be helpful for any client struggling with unwanted social and emotional behaviors. We will discuss the tools used for emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness that providers can use in their own practice. This training will also help providers make the distinction between those who may simply need extra help with emotion regulation in treatment or need to be referred to higher level of care such as adherent DBT therapy. We will cover some of the core strategies in DBT therapy including the use of setting contingencies, the concept of dialectics, and the use of mindfulness as a self-regulation tool. We will also dispel myths about borderlines, noting that there is an emerging field in DBT called Radically Open (RO) DBT, for those who are over-controlled, rather than under-controlled.

Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the concept of dialectics and apply 2 dialectical strategies in treatment with clients.
  2. Assess appropriateness of referrals to DBT providers and programs.
  3. Describe and utilize emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness skills in therapy with clients.
  4. Give 2 examples of mindfulness practices clients may use to help increase awareness and emotional control
