"The Sexual Desire Gap:

Strategies You Can Use in Your Next Session"

This is the most common sexual issue for couples. It can trigger pain and suffering; feelings of insecurity, self-doubt, loss, grief, anger, rage, and more. Over time, the desire gap, low, or lack of, sexual desire on one partner's part, can lead to an ever-growing chasm and eventually to sexual aversion. Couples may not be upfront about this issue. They may come into counseling with other complaints, hoping that addressing the other issues in their relationship (like "communication") will help them resolve their sexual issue privately.

The consequences can be dire, but the treatment, especially if addressed early enough, can be very effective. Here is the good news: You don't have to be an expert in sex therapy in order to treat a couple experiencing a sexual desire gap. In this presentation, Barbara will talk about different reasons the desire gap may exist, and discuss tools, and strategies that can be used in sessions right away. Barbara will also talk about common misconceptions therapists have and mistakes they make that will inadvertently intensify the issue and undermine effective treatment.

Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. List 3 reasons for a desire gap and low sexual desire.
  2. List 3 different forms of subtle coercion.
  3. Describe the difference between spontaneous and responsive desire.
  4. Describe 3 ways to address responsive desire.
