"Introduction to Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couples"
Note: Presented on Zoom.
The proven effectiveness of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) has made it a go-to approach for working with couples, families, and now, individuals as well. EFT is a research-validated, attachment-based approach to working with a diverse range of clients, as it offers a map for understanding our deepest relationship needs and struggles. This introductory seminar will combine didactic presentation, case vignettes, and videotaped excerpts of EFT in action with distressed couples. The seminar will provide a brief overview of the EFT model, key EFT techniques and interventions, and current research and practice applications, as well as information about how to pursue further training in the approach, if desired.
The goals of this seminar include: to introduce mental health professionals to one of the few research-validated forms of couples therapy; to broaden therapists’ understanding of EFT as an attachment-based approach to healing couples’ distress; to increase therapist’s interest in pursuing further training in a research-validated form of therapy that is effective with couples, families, and individuals.
Learning Objectives
In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Summarize basic adult attachment theory as it is utilized in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).
- Describe the 3 stages of EFT treatment with couples.
- Conceptualize a couple’s “negative cycle” by decoding a partner’s primary and secondary affects, behaviors, cognitions, and attachment needs.
