"Biofeedback, Neurofeedback and Interpersonal Biofeedback:

What You the MFT Need to Know"

Note:  Presented on Zoom.

Marriage and family therapists learn to provide various theoretical frameworks and modalities to improve relationships. Biofeedback uses learning theory, technological advances, and basic physiologic principles to promote these improvements. Biofeedback basically refers to any process where one learns to alter body, brain, and mind states by receiving direct feedback of the client’s physiology (i.e. heart rate, skin temperature, muscle tension). Neurofeedback, also known as Neurotherapy or EEG Biofeedback, is a form of biofeedback that teaches one to alter brain states by directly learning to alter brain waves seen on an EEG through the use of visual and audio information. By assisting the client to regulate their own nervous system in this manner, children and adults have reported decreased anxiety and pain levels, elevation in mood, a calmer approach to life, improved concentration and organizational abilities, and as a consequence, better quality of relationships in general. When couples are given multi-channel biofeedback (heart rate variability, hand temperature, sweat gland arousal, respiration) and audio-video playback, they can learn much faster ways to dis-inhibit autonomic arousal and be less reactive in dialogue as the speaker will demonstrate.

The goal of this workshop is to educate the professional audience on the world of biofeedback; i.e. general biofeedback used in clinics for stress related medical disorders, pain management, neurofeedback used to help persons with ADD, anxiety, depression and TBI, and other sub-specialties such as Peak Performance Training and Interpersonal Biofeedback.

Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. List the differences between all types of biofeedback, such as neurofeedback, heart rate variability biofeedback and peripheral biofeedback, and describe how a quantitative EEG is important in setting treatment goals.
  2. Identify the kinds of biofeedback that might be used in an MFT practice without additional training and which biofeedback therapies would ethically require further training and certification.
  3. Identify when it is more appropriate to use neurofeedback and biofeedback than traditional talk therapy.

Presenter:

Steven Kassel, LMFT has been Board Certified in Biofeedback since 1985 and Board Certified in Neurofeedback since 1992. Since becoming a licensed therapist in 1991, his practice had been focused on helping patients with stress related medical disorders, pain and stress management and general individual and family counseling. He has focused his work in several other areas such as trauma and its remediation, has taught workshops and published on Biofeedback in Grades K-12 and is a pioneer in Interpersonal Biofeedback, a hybrid of Couples Counseling and Biofeedback which has also been the topic of a couple papers. He is past president of the Western Association of Biofeedback & Neuroscience, past president of the Santa Clarita Chapter of CAMFT, was seen on a BBC science program “Natural Mystery” and is a health care reform activist.
