Claudia Kohner, Ph.D., and Faye Weinstein, Ph.D.

"Parental Fostering of Early Childhood Affect Integration"

Note:  Presented in-Person and on Zoom (Webinar)

In this workshop, Drs. Kohner and Weinstein will present on J. M. Jones’s (1995) concept of affective-symbolic integration in terms of its developmental importance and the role that parents play in promoting this type of integration.  Furthermore, the presentation will offer an extension of Jones’s developmental phases to expand the concept of symbolization in early childhood development to include nonverbal symbolization. A clinical case will be presented to illustrate both the utility of Jones’s concept of affective-symbolic integration and its expansion to include nonverbal symbolization. How to help parents use the concepts to foster affect integration in their young children is presented. Terms such as “time outs” and “tantrums” will be challenged in light of the theory. Problems in health and wellness, including chronic pain, may emerge in adults who did not have the opportunity to develop the capacity for affect integration will be discussed. The developmental association between lack of capacity for affect integration and chronic pain will be covered. A distinction will be made between “Affect Integration” and “Affect Regulation”.

Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1.  Define and distinguish two concepts of Affect Integration and Affect Regulation.
  2.  List three modes to guide parents to respond to their young children that promote Affect Integration.
  3.  Identify the developmental impact of poor capacity for Affect Integration and Affect Regulation.
