Membership Meeting - Webinar

Cassidy Russell, LMFT

"Video Games as a Tool for Connection"

Note:   (Webinar)

This workshop will focus on building clinicians' understanding of video games, the history, the recent research, and the possible applications of video games in treatment. Use of video games has only increased over time and with the multibillion dollar industry’s continued growth we are not going to see a drop in use any time soon. Misguided and out of date beliefs on video games can actively harm clients by pathologizing normal behaviors.

Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1.  Identify 2 ways to recognize the moral panic surrounding video games.
  2.  Identify 2 behaviors when gaming behavior becomes problematic.
  3.  List 3 possible ways to utilize video games as an intervention in therapy.

Presenter:

Cassidy Russell, LMFT is a certified geek therapist and a lifelong gamer. In 2021 she presented a workshop titled “Anime in Therapy,” for the Superhero Therapy convention.  She has an article published in Connections making a case for video games. On her podcast Therapy for Nerds she blends her love of all things nerdy with psychology to provide psychoeducation in a fun and engaging manner. Knowledge in geek culture has always come in handy in her private practice that focuses on individual therapy for teens and young adults.
