This is a time of tremendous changes in the health-care industry, affecting all therapists - the new DSM-5, healthcare reform, and now every diagnosis code is changing with the new ICD-10 as of October 1.

With the Affordable Care
Act, more clients now have insurance coverage, and will want therapists who accept their insurance. Insurance plans can still review treatment with out-of-network providers, so what you don't know can hurt you and your clients.

This presentation is for insurance veterans, novices, and out-of-network providers.

 Learning Objectives

  • Understand the changes in the healthcare industry that affect all therapists - the DSM-5, healthcare reform and the new ICD-10 diagnosis codes, effective October 1 2015.
  • Learn about the Affordable Care Act and insurance plans. More clients have insurance coverage now and will want therapists who accept their insurance. Insurance plans can still review treatment with out-of-network providers, so what you don't know can hurt therapists and their clients.
  • Explore whether a private-pay only practice is still a viable option.
  • Clarify misunderstandings of working with insurance - fee discounts, limited sessions, mountainous paperwork and micromanagement of treatment.

Barbara Griswold, LMFT, is currently in private practice in San Jose, CA and has been a provider for more than 15 insurance plans for over 20 years.

She is the author of Navigating the Insurance Maze
and writes a free monthly insurance e-newsletter for therapists with insurance questions and problems.

Barbara has been interviewed on National Public Radio's Morning Edition, and for Psychotherapy Finances Magazine. She is also a past member of the CAMFT Ethics Committee and Board of Directors, as well as a former BBS examiner.
